Mouse trouble on sid

Hi,

Upgraded sid two days ago for the first time for a week or so. Today
have serious mouse problems. Xfce on AMD. First thing tried of course
was another mouse, just the same.

If I move the mouse over a window it is raised to the top.

If I move the mouse over some buttons, such as in Einstein, the button
is clicked. Buttons in most applications don't get clicked. I can't see
any obvious window-building dependencies for Einstein.

If I click in a title bar with intent to drag, I have about half a
second to drag before the pointer changes to a move symbol and no
further movement occurs.

If I move the mouse over the work area in GIMP, the window scrolls all
the way to the left. I can drag the scroll bar back a bit if I then
immediately move the mouse away from the work area, but there's no
point in doing that.

If I move the mouse over an area of some web pages in Firefox which can
be zoomed with the scroll wheel, it zooms all the way in. netweather.tv
does this, Google Maps does not. Maps does zoom all the way in when
opened, but seems OK after that.

The computer is barely usable in this state. There were too many
packages upgraded, including the kernel, to be able to narrow down the
culprit or attempt a rollback, well over 100. Google tells me various
things about making the mouse do things, but they all seem to involve
some extra mouse tweak package, none of which I have installed.

Where do I start?
