Network manager: activating VPN in GNOME remote session doesn't work, but in KDE remote session (xrdp)

Hi

I'm encountering a somehow strange problem:

A user logs into another computer via xrdp, starting either KDE Plasma or
GNOME3. Then she wants to connect to a vpn (openvpn) by clicking on Tray Icon
-> Networks -> <VPN name> -> Connect (in case of KDE) or <WLAN icon> -> VPN Off
-> Connect (in case of Gnome).

If it's a KDE session, connecting to the VPN works just fine.
In a Gnome session, the VPN icon is shown as connecting... (the three dots)
"forever", while the VPN menu entry is shown as if it connected successfully
(there is an entry to disconnect).

Syslog shows the same two VPN related lines in both cases, but while in the
KDE case there are more lines following, in the Gnome case it seems to hang -
no more line appear. The first two lines are:

MYHOSTNAME NetworkManager[1169]: <info>  [1659945658.8171]
vpn[0x55b54f2be990,ede1c8a5-4428-4610-bf27-dc2bc040e876,"<VPN NAME>"]:
starting openvpn
MYHOSTNAME NetworkManager[1169]: <info>  [1659945658.8175] audit:
op="connection-activate" uuid="ede1c8a5-4428-4610-bf27-dc2bc040e876"
name="<VPN NAME>" pid=20182 uid=1002 result="success"

If the user is logged into the computer directly, she can activate the VPN
connection and it's just working fine. Only in a remote session it doesn't
work, but only in the Gnome case.

Debian Testing with Gnome 42, KDE Plasma/Frameworks also the latest.

Does anyone have an idea what's happening here or why the connection is not
established correctly?

Thank you very much!

Best,
Bernd
