I use XFCE to. Might want to try /etc/network/interfaces, too. Here's a relevant piece of mine:
# wlan0 -- Get DHCP from SSID: Frasier_Residents, PW: <PW>
auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-ssid Frasier_Residents
wpa-psk <PW>
This turns on WiFi at boot and gets a DHCP IP and stuff from the local WiFi net. And no boogers in the panel...
