IMHO, you are heading off on a tangent.

In your first mail you said at the start of it:

Then later on:

If you have changed your mind about xsane I can go back to slumbering.

OTOH, if that is still your objective, the information asked for may
be useful. I'll repeat the request:

   > which Debian version is in use.

   > avahi-browse is in the avahi-utils package.

Add 'scanimage -L' to the request.
