somewhere when the VMs "randomly" hang? Not necessarily on the VM that hangs,
but somewhere touching a related filesystem, disk or network device?

Thank you for asking. No backups on the host or inside the guest. And nothing else IO intensive on the host. They're IO intensive tasks in some guests but as I mentioned it's difficult to say if those tasks trigger the freezing.
