I parsed the preceding conversation as indicating that

$ ln -sf /home/auser/.Xauthority /root/.Xauthority

produced a setup that worked, but

$ cp /home/auser/.Xauthority /root/.Xauthority

produced one that didn't. That seems strange enough to me.
