Yup, but very few of the Microsoft Windows users today have a background
in MS-DOS, or command lines of any sort.

Sad but true.   Hmmm...   I have a Windows 8.1 in QEMU-KVM.  When I get home, I plan to bring up Power Shell.  I will bet that "dir" works there too.
