Card 1 seems to have 3 outputs: analog, digital, and hdmi

Did you try in /etc/modprobe.d/* to set the preferred one?

This part seems to help understanding what's going on:

!!Aplay/Arecord output
!!--------------------

APLAY

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Loopback [Loopback], device 0: Loopback PCM [Loopback PCM]
  Subdevices: 2/2
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
  Subdevice #1: subdevice #1

!!--------------------

my hp thin client has
cat /etc/modprobe.d/50-alsa.conf
options snd-hda-intel index=1,0

Hope this helps
