Why would it be unfortunate to have choice ? There is no "one size fits all", so anyone can select the best method for their needs.

/etc/network/interfaces, NetworkManager, and systemd-networkd.

At least two more : Wicd and dhcpcd (which is not just another DHCP client daemon despite its name). Some desktop environment such as LXDE install Wicd and IIRC Raspbian, a Debian derivative for the Raspberry Pi, uses dhcpcd.
