The term Yankee refers specifically to a person from the northern, rather than southern, part of the USA, when used by a US native, usually one from the south. It is not a compliment. A damn Yankee is a Yankee who intends to live indefinitely in the south.
It has been used by people from other countries to refer to a person from the USA, no matter their location. A Yankee as opposed to a Kiwi, or a Brit, or an Aussie.
No offense toward any group of people is intended in this post.
