Then use a different installer! The netinst dvd leaves you with what would be considered a crippled system by most people. Requiring a functioning network card removes that possibility for the noob while still allowing an expert to simply back out of the installer when the computer reboots to get their desired base install. It is no harder than presently for an expert, and would serve to fix a lot of "failed" installations.
