<chuckle> I got trapped in a mental rut. I now have a new mental outline of how to start from scratch when doing the first install of Linux on a new machine.
... and the problem has to do with a change. If a label already exists, that the installer can't create one should be irrelevant. (That is can't I consider a design flaw.) By deselecting swap in partitioning you maintain the status quo.
