Getting started on Emacs can be pretty daunting, to be honest.
It pays off big time, IMHO. One of the problems is that it's
a very old program with a strong community and it has developed
a 30-year old culture which is difficult to penetrate.

It displays one of those "documentation problems": in spite of
being thoroughly documented down to tech function's source code,
including full text search, all accessible from inside the edior,
I had a tough time to "get into" the culture to be able to make
use of it.

I'd recommend just installing your distro's emacs (Debian's is
pretty good, albeit not cutting edge) and working through the
tutorial (available through the Help menu), keeping a tab on
some idiosyncracies (e.g. the tutorial tries to nudge you into
using cursor -- called "point" in Emacs jargon -- movement
comands like control-n, control-p although the arrow keys work
perfectly). Just ask away when stuck.

For some pointers on Org-mode and specifically on org-babel:

http://orgmode.org/manual/index.html
http://orgmode.org/worg/org-contrib/babel/intro.html

and of course, the inimitable Sacha Chua's blog

Take a bit of patience wth you. It's worth it.

Enjoy the ride
