Ah yes might have been the easier way.
The naming is set in
/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

I couldn't find out why and when it changed. Perhaps eth* is typical for
ipw2200 (However https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=78419)

Thanks for helping Lisi. I also suspected the wpa_supplicant for the
problems she had.
