I unfortunately don't know how to determine this...
Maybe switching between modesetting and intel X driver is what you
need, depending on which is in use now. /var/log/Xorg.0.log will say
which video driver is in use. If it's not intel or modesetting, X is
running on an inferior fallback driver.

could provide some insight on driver selection, but you still may need
Xorg or video driver or both from unstable.
I'm unfortunately at a loss to understand your message here... I
understand what you mean by using things from unstable (I've read the
Debian FAQ section on stable/unstable etc.) but as I'm relatively new,
it's still a bit cryptic to me.
I chose to use Debian because Ubuntu failed me twice -- both times, the
"Automatic Update" failed miserably and left me with an unusable system,
on two different laptops. So I decided to go back to the source of
Ubuntu, hence why I'm here... I'll do my best to follow along with the
advice given here.
