I think the drivers are put in /opt.

He couldn't even print locally at one stage so there is progress. Before
moving on to printer sharing on the server and printer discovery on the
client he should convince himself that local printing is indeed working
as it should. Printing from an application such as Iceweasel and using
lp ('lp -d /etc/nsswitch' would do) are recommended.

He should also reconsider posting the server's cupsd.conf.
