There used to be update-notifier, but I see it's been replaced by 
gnome-packagekit.

On my sid install with LXDE and quite a few gnome packages (due to 
network-manager-gnome) it would pull in 66 packages in addition. You 
might want to look at cron-apt or apticron instead.
