putty login - running gnu screen causes putty console to shrink

When I log in to my debian box using putty, I set in putty config a
width of 100 (rather than 80). This works.

When I run GNU Screen, the putty console shrinks back to 80 width.

Any idea why this might be?

I've tried commenting out all lines in my .bashrc and .profile and
.screenrc, but problem persists.
