And sooner or later they will no longer be complete newbies and can 
consider updrading or using backports.

Stephen, you do not like Xfce4.  Nor do I.  But that is not a reason 
why it should not be the default.  Other people like it.

And for what it is worth, I can just about live with but don't 
strongly like Xfce4, but I strongly dislike GNOME.
