...you do need it for wireless. Not exactly sure what you mean by this 
sentence. Even if you use wireless only occasionally, you still need 
some tool to configure it and according to your /etc/network/interfaces 
it's not ifupdown.

By the way, if you have to load the module manually because it's not 
loaded automatically (strange, did you investigate this?) you can list 
it in /etc/modules.
