Are there any relevant settings in the BIOS?

I've previously dealt with mbs that had a "memory hole" problem (ASUS)
but that only prevented some of the RAM *above* the first GB being
usable. That was sort of fixed with a BIOS upgrade.

It "sounds" like you are booting the install from Windows (loadlin.exe)
which means that many of the kernel parameters we are suggesting may not
work - it may also mean the problem is Windows...
