Re: Why Debian

Kind of depends on two things:
- do you have experience with another Linux (or Unix) environment?
- do you have a machine you can dedicate as a sandbox?

If answers to both are yes:
a. download an install CD, follow the install instructions line-by-line, then play, or,
b. boot a live-cd derivative like Knoppix, play for a while, then go to a.

if you don't know linux, but have a sandbox to play with:
a. check out linuxfromscratch.org, build a system from scratch - a good way to learn about linux, and what's in a distribution, then,
b. download and install Debian, play

if answers to both are no:
a. pick a virtual environment - say virtualbox (or maybe Parallels if you're on a mac) b. again, play with linuxfromscratch - but be prepared for longer compile times
c. download and install Debian, play
