Fwd: php install

Please tell why php5 does not work under apache2 (with engine on)
using this index file:

<HTML>
  <HEAD>
    <TITLE>Test Page</TITLE>
  </HEAD>
<BODY>
<?php
echo "Hello";
>

</BODY>
</HTML>


....all I get is the ----------- display.

Can you help?
