When installing from the iso, the installer asks if you want to install virtualbox-ose-guest additions from wheezy's repositories; I said yes to this. That way, you get the full gnome 3 shell desktop. The effect of desktop corrupting only occurs when "gnome" (full gnome 3 shell) is selected as desktop. If gnome classic is selected at login, all is OK, no corruption occurs.
