No, neither the username nor the password contain a colon.

There is a submission port which I have specified as instructed when
running dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config.  The other mail clients use it.

Still this is a thought.  I tried running dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config
again omitting the submission port.  This resulted in a message, "Sorry,
that domain is not in my list of allowed rcpthosts."
