I recently experienced the same problems.
In X, try xfontsel.
On your ttys:
dpkg-reconfigure console-setup or setupcon
TerminusBold 20x10 is easier to read and still 38x102 char screen
reboot got larger text on all VTs ( telinit 1 might have done it )
