in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf add this line
options snd-hda-intel model=generic

reboot linux, if alsa starts without errors use alsamixer to ensure all volumes are correctly set >0%

Thank you very much. That cures the problem. I would not have been
able to work out that it was due to the motherboard having a non
supported chip.
