Yes, and one prerequisite that aptitude installed for hwinfo was a hal library.
hwinfo requires some libraries that get pretty close to the hardware - perhaps a changed library is causing your problems
Except that a changed library is not running, or even loaded, when GRUB is running (let alone when GRUB is just starting up). Just to doubly confirm things, I just purged hwinfo and purged the two prerequisite packages that aptitude installed, and tried rebooting. GRUB is still slow. Daniel
