Yup, you're right but it has to be done with "dconf-editor" (I don't seem 
to have "gconf-editor" anymore in my wheezy).

The key involved here is "org.gnome.desktop.background" "show-desktop-
icons [x]", it has to be checked/enabled. That's all.
