The journal_data option provides full protection, but I suspect it is
not a practical solution for normal usage.

  Do you mean the "data=journal" mount option ?
  According the documentation, that seems a way to overcome this problem.

  And what about a file like /etc/modprobe.d/options, and all
  other config files which were never edited ?
