In Libreoffice writer, when you open a file, they are displayed in
alphabetical order.
How do you set the default order to be by date,( third column )

Mmm... in OOo, if you choose an OO-styled "open with..." menu instead
using your system's default (gtk or qt) the last option you select to
sort the files it remains unchanged, at least from the same session.

Greetings,

Hi
I'm not sure I understand what you are saying.

Shame on me. I sometimes speak like a little pig asking for launch O:-)

If you open OOo/
libreoffice writer then only two options for opening a file are "open "
& "open recent"
I've looked through Tools> options and everything else in that pulldown,
but cant find the "sort by" option

Try this:

Go to "Tools / Options / LibreOffice / General" and check "[x] use
libreoffice prompts or dialogs", click "Accept/OK" and go to "File /
Open". Sort by the desired column and this setting will be kept for the
next time you open a file.

Not there in LibreOffice 3.4.4
OOO340m1 (Build:402)

I hope that libreOffice adopts the OpenOffice Help style. The current one is not very good IMHO.
