In case someone finds it useful, the problem was that the intel drivers
with debian stable are not new enough to cope with Second Gen Sandybridge
integrated graphics.

Solution to this thread was therefore to add backports to sources.list,
upgrade the kernel, upgrade any firmware that the newer kernel needed (in
my case realtek NIC, in the non-free tree, or maybe contrib, something
like that) then install the newest intel driver from backports.

Seems to be sorted, though I am getting

xhci_hcd etc etc: failed to enable MSI-X

when I boot.  So far it does not seem to cause any issues.
