Hi Kevin

yes the xserver-xorg-video-intel package is installed. how do i check which driver is actually being used? one strange thing is that the kernel is printing out the following to the console, not sure what it means, could it be a fault with the controller board in the LCD?

You can tell by looking in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. If after looking at the log file, the problem isn't readily apparent, post the contents here, and someone should be able to figure out what's wrong.

I also have an Intel 945GM graphics chip in my laptop. Works fine for me on Wheezy. Sounds like you're running the VESA (generic) graphics driver instead of the Intel one. Do you have xserver-xorg-video-intel installed? Also, if you have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, rename it to something else, and try restarting X.

Hope this helps!
