I like an approach closer to the FHS:

/
/home
/home/$user/big

for single user or

/
/home
/media/big -> /home/$user1/big
/media/big -> /home/$user2/big

for more users with shared data. /home is big enough to hold all user 
configs and documents, while big is for big files :p like photos, music, 
movies, etc.
