Because

$ dpkg -S bin/pidof
sysvinit-utils: /bin/pidof

dpkg thinks the package is ok. Since "loosing" binaries is a bit unusual 
I would suggest fsck-ing your file systems and running SMART tests on 
your harddisk. You do have backups, right?
