works but if it only changes the files, and not the images of running
kernel or processes... And if you do several updates over 2 months

The checkinstall (in the debian-goodies package) script will show you all the processes holding obsolete images, and will usually tell you the script to run in order to restart them.

Only kernel upgrades require a reboot (but there are some clever people who have gotten around that).
