I guess he speaks about when you draw some area with your mouse and that
this area delimits some zone where some files are in.

OK, that's what I thought.

                                                      In this case,
normally, the files in the related zone are selected. When you're in
list mode, Nautilus lets you drag&  drop at the place of using area
selection, if you have too many columns showing properties such as last
mod date, etc.


OTOH, some GUI apps (Icedeove and Geeqie spring right to mind) are programmed to interpret any click-drag as the beginning of a drag & drop.
