Of course, not always... But I think it's certainly possible to run a very minimal X system both in terms of package weight and configuration tweaks. It just requires care in the installation process. Someone else mentioned installing Xterm, and that's a pretty good idea. It should drag in only the minimal amount of X. .02 A
