familiar with such problems? Let me know if there's any more information I
can provide that would help narrow down the problem.

I had some odd problems with lenny on a Toshiba Satellite 4060 XCDT,
which had been perfectly fine with etch. The problems were:
intermittent hangs on initial fsck, soundcard not being detected
(sometimes) and the fan would come on, never to turn off.
I found that these problems did not occur without acpi (i.e. add
acpi=off to the kernel boot line).
Worth a shot.
