Wireless card only works after an ifconfig ra0 up

Hello,

I am using a wireless Ralink network card on my network, equipped with
Debian Lenny.
If I only do
$ ifconfig
, I receive info about lo and eth0. When doing
$ ifconfig ra0 up
, I can do
$ iwconfig
with success (there was no wireless extension displayed before doing
ifconfig ra0 up).

Is there a way to make this process automatic?
