Updating our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy

Title: Updating our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy
Plaxo Pulse

Plaxo will be updating its Privacy Policy and Terms of Service effective, October 6th, 2009. While we have provided detailed information on the Plaxo.com Website, we are sending this email to make sure that all users have notice about the upcoming changes. Plaxo has always been about keeping you connected with the people you know and care about, across the various tools and services you (and they) use. Long before people were talking about "data portability" and social network interoperability, we were helping our members keep their personal data in sync across multiple computers, applications, and Websites -- while giving them fine-grained control of what they share and with whom. We have always been strong believers that your data is yours (not ours) and that you should have the freedom to take it with you.

As you probably know, Plaxo was acquired last year by Comcast and is now a business unit of Comcast Interactive Media (CIM). Not surprisingly, given the above focus, we've been working on enabling interoperability between Plaxo and other CIM Websites. In advance of rolling out this common identity system, we've developed a unified Terms of Service and Privacy Policy that will apply to Plaxo and the other participating Comcast Websites, providing consistent protection and eliminating the complexity and potential confusion of having different terms and policies for each Website.

The new Terms of Service and Privacy Policy will go into effect on October 6th, 2009. We encourage you to give these new terms and policies a read. Although they are legal documents, we have tried to make them straight-forward and consistent in spirit with the current versions they are replacing. The new documents will enable us to provide you with services that are more convenient for you to access and with experiences that are more personalized and relevant. They include the following key points:
  1. Demographic portions of your data (such as zip code, gender, or industry) and usage patterns may be shared with our trusted partners who deliver advertising to you on our behalf. Consistent with our current policy, personally identifiable information (e.g. your name, address, phone number, email) will not be shared with third parties for advertising purposes without your consent; and
  2. The advertising networks who deliver ads on Plaxo may use their own cookies to collect information about a user's activities across their entire network of Websites.
The new Privacy Policy will continue to carry the TRUSTe seal, and will retain the core principles of our existing policy:
  1. That users own their personal data;
  2. That users can delete their data and/or modify their communications preferences;
  3. That personally identifiable data is never sold to third parties without the user's informed consent; and
  4. That users will be provided proactive notice on issues affecting their data.
We hope you enjoy these improvements and the seamless access we hope to provide our valued customers. Of course, we encourage you review the terms and policies and your communications preferences, and to contact us if you have any questions about these changes or if you would like to opt-out by deleting your Plaxo account.
