compile error - missing X11 headers

After a rather lengthy break from compiling my own programs, I'm trying to build fvwm, 
but am getting an error message: "X11 libraries or header files could not be found..."  
Now that Debian is using Xorg, I'm at a loss as to how to fix this.  Comments?
