I have this in my interfaces file:

iface tunnel0 inet static
       address <local_private>
       netmask 255.255.255.255
       mtu 1480
pre-up iptunnel add tunnel0 mode ipip remote <remote_public> local <local_public>
       post-up route add -host <remote_private> dev tunnel0
       post-down iptunnel del tunnel0

However this is just for running ipip links between two hosts (don't ask).
However I think that using subnet remote_private should work...

And of course remember to exchange ips on other host...
