Usually the phone's in my pocket. Occasionally it's still in the car
and I realise I need to go and get it about 1/2 hour later... :-(

Sometimes I power up the computer with all wireless networking disabled. I
can't remember whether blueproximity works when I switch the wireless
stuff back on, again.

That's in the bluetooth configuration screen. (System > Preferences >
Bluetooth,or from the Preferences entry in the menu of the bluetooth
"blob" in your system tray.)
