I guess Osamu's point was that one shouldn't recommend using foreign
packages, if there are debian packages for the same purpose as well.

It's a closed-source program, so I'm not sure of anything about it.

Is the ubuntu package so much better and so well supported as to really
recommend it to users who might stay with lenny after the release?

It's a wrapper around the same close-source files that we install in other ways.
