I think nvidia-glx-legacy is what you need.

Good morning, ok firstly thank you for all you help last night. I Just successfully installed nvidia-glx-legacy from the how-to that was kindly given, all stages completed with no error and I now get the nvidia logo when X starts but no effect at all on the old problem, frame rate still about a frame a second.
