Even though they are arbitrary, why does a "general desktop" *need* 
amd64 if it has installed .lte. 4GB RAM?

(Note, though, that DRAM is *dirt cheap*, and I was able to fill my 
mobo with 8GB for only US$85.  Which is why I have an amd64 kernel.)
