you can work with arrays whilst they are online, you don't want to stop
the array, you have a working mirror of the array. (you could if you
want to use a live cd, but in my opinion it doesn't get you much extra
than a reboot)

What to do
1) save your important data
2) google mdadm hot add disk
3) google smartlctl read up about smart and sata hard drives


4) check /proc/partition for sdb
5) check /var/log/syslog (& dmesg) for anything relating to sdb
6) run smartctl against sdb

7) make a decision if you need a new sdb, with the above info
8) if unsure, reboot box and check above again

9) replace or fix sdb
10) check the partition table on sdb
11) hot add the partitions back to the broken raid sets

12) done
