Debian has meta-packages like 'gnome' that make it easier to install
the gnome desktop. But these only allow you to keep all the listed
packages or none of them. So if you want more control, you can remove
the meta-package and install the indivisual packages and manage them
yourself. There are also 'smaller' versions like gnome-core and
gnome-desktop-environment that install a smaller group of packages.
use 'apt-cache show gnome' to see more info.
