I had a similar experience a week or so ago with an X1400 on my Thinkpad
Z61M. (I had 2D running previously, not 3D.) I fetched the previous
version of the driver from the AMD Catalyst site and installed it after
purging the Debian package. The script said there was an error of some
kind but nevertheless fglrx worked again at 1600x1050 in 2D.
